Beginnings: Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados and grew up listening to reggae music. She chose to pursue a career in music after originally signing up as an army cadet in a sub-military programme. She met music producer Evan Rogers who was holidaying in Barbados in 2003 and was so impressed with her, he recorded demos with the singer. Jay Z came across her music nearly a year later and signed her on the spot following an audition in February 2005.

Her debut album, Music of the Sun, was released in August 2005 and sold over two million copies worldwide. Her follow-up album, A Girl Like Me, was released in April 2006 and featured the international hit SOS which was a success in countries including Britain, Canada, Germany and New Zealand. The album also signaled Rihanna’s first headline tour with Rihanna: Live in Concert Tour in summer 2006.
